As I (Lisa) prepared for the arrival of peepi tua toru (baby number three) in January 2025, I searched for affirmation cards—or something—with kupu Maaori that truly resonated with me and would look beautiful in my birthing space at home. A quick Google search didn’t turn up what I was looking for (maybe I was impatient, or perhaps my Google skills weren’t as sharp as I thought…), so, as with many of our Manawa Creative items, the birthing cards came to life from a personal need.

In designing these cards, I carefully selected kupu that were both empowering and simple—easy to pronounce, easy to absorb.

The last thing I wanted during hapuutanga was anything that felt complicated or visually overwhelming. I craved imagery that was soft, subtle, and calming—something that wouldn’t irritate me in moments of pain but would instead offer a steady focal point and a sense of beauty.

As my due date approached, a few key phrases swirled in my mind—words that grounded me, guided me, and calmed my nerves as I awaited peepi’s arrival. They helped me with my other peepi.

My hope is that these cards do the same for you—that they offer reassurance in the midst of uncertainty, a moment of stillness when your mind is racing.
